Clitheroe - the town. Why not visit before the match?

Clitheroe can be found in the beautiful Ribble Valley in Lancashire, close to Blackburn and Burnley. The nearby village of Dunsop Bridge has officially been identified by Ordnance Survey as the exact centre of the United Kingdom. The town is situated off the A59 which goes to Skipton and West Yorkshire in one direction and Preston and the M6 in the other direction.

If you have time why not visit the town itself? You can easily walk from the ground or use the pay-and-display town centre car parks. Market days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and Clitheroe has many fine specialist shops - not least the famous Cowmans Butchers sausage shop!

Clitheroe has a ruined Norman castle with the smallest keep in England. It stands on a limestone knoll and overlooks the town. Fine views can be had from the top of the castle and you can even see Shawbridge! The last resident of the castle was Henry, Earl of Lincoln who died in 1311. The castle was destroyed by the Roundheads in 1648.

The town retains much of it's ancient character. The main street climbs to the castle between limestone buildings flecked with white fronted Georgian houses. The town well in Wellgate close to the Dog pub is still in working order.

Clitheroe is famous for it's connection with the development of the Gas Turbo Engine - an invention that could be described as changing the way we live.

The Ribble Valley is served by a variety of hostelries providing top class fare. Accomodation can be found in the town itself or in the many surrounding villages.
