Clitheroe 1 - 2 Goole AFC
Blues fall as the run continues
By Jack Towers
It is now six games without a win and four losses on the bounce for the first time this season as Clitheroe endure the worst run of the campaign.
Goole, fighting to stay in the league did not offer too much in the first half other than a couple of early chances and the Blues took advantage playing a high pressure looking to shut their visitors out.
George Hughes was causing problems with his deliveries into the box from free kicks and corners and Clitheroe came close to the lead when Ross Dent latched onto the end of a Hughes free kick and volleyed at Ben Saynor in the Goole net who saved comfortably.
The chances kept on coming but Saynor was determined to keep the Blues out; he was saved by the bar however when after a terrific ball in by Hughes again, Mike Sampson rose highest to head towards goal and struck the woodwork.
This was followed up by an effort by Kurt Willoughby which was expertly saved by Saynor. Half-Time: Blues 0-0 Goole.
Not for the first time this season it was a slow start in the second half and Goole instantly took the lead through Declan Howe in the 47th minute with the Blues half asleep.
The heads were dropped from this moment and Clitheroe failed to get a foothold in the second half at all.
Mike Sampson was once again closest for Clitheroe as he headed just over midway through the second half but it was clearly not to be for Simon Haworth's side.
Goole managed to finish the game off in the dying minutes catching Clitheroe on the break and Derry Robson went on to easily slot past Thompson.
In the final moments of the game Clitheroe were awarded a penalty and Kurt Willoughby tucked away for his 26th goal of the season and rescue a consolation.
