Clitheroe Make It 4 Straight Wins After Saturday's Victory

Clitheroe's tremendous run of form in the Evo-Stik Northern Division continued Saturday with a fine 1-3 victory away from home against Harrogate Railway.
The reverse fixture saw the blues triumph to a 3-0 win at Shawbridge back in October and now with Clitheroe working their way into a chance of making the play-offs, Simon Garner's side were looking to make it 4 straight wins.

The game couldn't have started any better when on 11 minutes a Sefton Gonzales knock on was latched onto by Louis Mayers who from 25 yards on the left hand side unleashed what only could be described as the goal of the season with a volley that thundered into the top right corner.

The visitors were encouraged from the wonderstrike and continued to up the pressure on the Harrogate Railway goal, coming close just 4 minutes later with a corner being crossed dangerously into the box, but the header was cleared off the line by the Railway defence.

The hosts then had a chance of their own on 20 minutes when striker Amar Purewal tried his luck but his shot was held firmly by Ben Woodhead.

Chances on goal continued to come Clitheroe's way showing their dominance with Sefton Gonzales, who has recently been nominated for the Evo-Stik Supporters Player of the Season award, and Brandon Barski having efforts on goal but the Harrogate Railway goalkeeper.

On the stroke of half time however, the hosts were given the opportunity to level the scoring when Harrogate were awarded a penalty for Simon Garner bringing down Railway striker Nathan Curtis in the box. Amar Purewal stepped up and converted the spot-kick to level the scores at the break.

Half Time: Harrogate Railway 1-1 Clitheroe

The 2nd half started very bright for Clitheroe as they regained the lead just minutes after the restart through Mayers for his and Clitheroe's 2nd goal of the game. The ball coming in from the left and Mayers was present to tuck the ball into the back of the net.

The blues dominance continued to grow and on 62 minutes were rewarded a penalty of their own when Brandon Barski charged into the Railway box and was brought down. Up stepped Louis Mayers to round off a wonderful hat-trick, his first for Clitheroe.

However Clitheroe had to see the last 10 minutes out with 10 men due to an injury sustained to Blues keeper Ben Woodhead which resulted in full back James Walker being between the sticks for the remainder of the match.

Despite being down to 10 men, Clitheroe were still pressing for more goals with Michael Hampson bursting through the left hand side but his effort was a whisker wide of the target. Harrogate failed to capitalise on their advantage and were defeated once again by Clitheroe.
