Blackpool frontman signs on loan in eve-of-season swoop

Clitheroe boss Phil Brown has swooped to bolster his strikeforce on the eve of the new league season with the capture of exciting Blackpool youngster Owen Watkinson.

Watkinson has joined the Blues on loan until January from the League One side after training with Brown’s squad in recent weeks.

And Brown believes the 18-year-old goalscorer will be a major asset as the Blues prepare to launch their BetVictor North-West campaign at home to Brighouse on Saturday.

“He’s a very hard-working and competitive forward,” said the Blues’ boss.

“He carries a constant threat and will enhance our attacking options no end.

“He can create for others, but his main strength is taking scoring opportunities. He’s a clinical finisher and ruthless in and around the box.”

Watkinson signed his first professional contract at Blackpool in May after finishing as the leading scorer for the Seasiders’ youth team last season and featured at senior level in the early part of their pre-season schedule.

He also spent time on loan at Bamber Bridge to experience first-team football in the BetVictor League.

And his arrival at Shawbridge comes at the perfect time, as the Blues look to bounce back from their FA Cup exit last weekend and make a flying start to their league programme against divisional newcomers Brighouse.

Clitheroe are grateful to Blackpool with their help in the administration of the deal.
