The Blues crashed to a 4-2 defeat at Cantilever Park on Tuesday evening, with all six goals coming in a frantic end to end first half.

Team changes from Saturday's win over Darlington saw Simon Garner drop out through suspension, to be replaced by the returning skipper David Lynch. Cory Bent and Joey Mullen returned from duty with AFC Fylde to take their places on the substitutes bench.

It was the Blues who started the brighter and took a deserved lead on 12 minutes, with Lynch hitting a precise low strike from 25 yards out.

The lead lasted just two minutes however. David Mannix hit a free kick in to the box which wasn't cleared and a Nathan Burke header went over Peter Collinge and in to the net.

The Blues were attacking with great purpose down the flanks, with James Walker, Seydou Bamba and Danny Morton all delivering some decent crosses. The Warrington defence held firm though and they took the lead on 32 minutes. Steven Tames pick up a pass from Scott Metcalfe and got past Danny Brady to fire home past Collinge.

On 37 minutes it was 3-1 to the home side as Burke brushed off a challenge from Roberto Bonaminio, to finish brilliantly from a tight angle for his second goal of the night.

The Blues fought back with Louis Mayers and Lynch forcing saves from Warrington keeper Karl Wills, before Sefton Gonzales pulled one back on 44 minutes, with a well taken header from Bamba's inch perfect cross.

In first half stoppage time, the Blues failed to defend a corner and James McCarten had a free header at the far post to give Warrington a 4-2 half time lead.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first half and there were few opportunities for either side.

The Blues made a triple substitution on 58 minutes with Bent, Mullen and Ryan Cattermole replacing Ross Dent, Richard Burns and Bamba. James Walker reverted to left back, with Bent and Mullen playing wide.

The Blues best chance to reduce the scoreline came on 75 minutes when a good run from Morton ended with his chip shot just going over the top.

A disappointing result, but the Blues played some good football at times against a Warrington side who are still in with a outside chance of reaching the play-offs.
