An afternoon that marked the end of a heat wave for the North West, but those loyal to Shawbridge were hoping for a warm performance from Simon Garner’s eleven. Though it was a frosty start from both sides as struggled to break through on goal, despite on the ball domination from Clitheroe is was Ben Collings in the yellow of Warrington who had the first true chance, his 14th minute shot inches wide of Callum Jacovlevs’ goal.

7 minutes later Louis Mayers latched on to end of Garner’s lob come cross, The Blues’ number nine, failed to direct his header on target. Clitheroe were still dominating and Sefton Gonzales blossomed with confidence, and it was Gonzales’ 23rd minute knock down in the Warrington penalty area that set up Joey Mullen, the blonde haired youngster could only strike into the grateful grasp of keepers Karl Wills however.

Though missed chances were forgotten when Louis Mayers struck just inside the Yellow’s box, a powerful, driven, accurate 34th minute bullet into the bottom right of Wills’ net, Clitheroe’s 72nd goal of this First division North campaign was beauty. Moments before Nat Cox blew for half time Warrington had their chance to level, Anthony Hickey broke free from the Clitheroe back four, in on goal the yellow number nine had his shot blocked at the last moment by the retreating Seydou Bamba.

The second half began with the visitors utilising all three of their substitutions, Craig Robinson, Chris Garhgan and Be Wharton walking out in place of Tom Hardwick, Gerard Kinsella and Josh Haynes, an attacking move from the team in 8th.

58 minutes had passed when Louis Mayers forced a brilliant save from visiting keeper Wills, Mayers powerful free kick from 30 yards looked certain for the top right before Wills stretched all he could to reach it.

Four minutes later claims for a penalty were made after a Chris Gahgan fell to floor in the box, however referee Cox viewed the incidentally differently, booking Gahgan for simulation. Though on the 71st minute Jacovlevs failed to handle a tame visiting strike, the loose ball pounced upon by Collins who equalised into the empty net.

Warrington found fighting spirit, dominating on the ball and running at goal on every occasion, however nine minutes from the 90th it was Mayers again, this time a swift turn and strike inside his opponent’s box bested both defenders and goalkeeper to cap off The Blues’ season with three more points.

The result changes little for both sides who in reality had nothing in relation to the league to play for, The Blues remain in 13th and end the season with 52 points, 73 goals for and 81 against. Whereas Warrington slip a place down to 9th, finishing on 65 points with 65 goals for and 55 against.
