Clitheroe 4 Chasetown 1

After the heavy defeat away at Runcorn, manager Danny Caldecott rang the changes to freshen the squad and to give debuts to Simon Njaria, Emerich Poilly, Eden Bailey and Amaar Hussain.

Chasetown started the game brightly after their long trip North, but the shape of the game changed after 12 minutes when their defender Luke McGinnell was shown a straight red as the last man after panic ensued when Eden Bailey headed for goal on the edge of the box. Immediately, the visitors sat deeper and the much changed Clitheroe side had to break them down. Bailey went close again five minutes later as a desperate defensive dive blocked him as he was looking to pull the trigger, but the pressure told late in the first half when a short corner was laid to Ben Collins whose cross was deflected goalwards by Bailey, with Simon Njaria bundling the ball home.

The second half followed a similar pattern of Clitheroe pressure. On 60 minutes, Veron Parny popped in a tantalising free kick which eluded everyone, and minutes later Bailey followed up the rebound from a Matty Barlow shot, but was ruled to have been offside before he converted. As it often the case when reduced to 10 men, in a rare foray forward Chasetown should have levelled when a defender found himself behind the home defence, but his shot was well saved by Hakan Burton. Clitheroe brought on fresh legs and almost instantly found a higher gear. On 77 minutes, the immense Sefton Gonzales chested a sublime forward chip from Hussain beyond his marker and cooly gathered himself before slotting home. Two substitutes then combined as Gonzales released Jack Massey down the right wing and he laid it on a sixpence for Amaar Hussain to strike home, before Gonzales did the same for Massey in identical fashion to bury from close range. Chasetown scored a consolation goal in injury time from the penalty spot, but by this point the game was beyond them and the Blues registered their first home win since November..
