Clitheroe cruise to a stylish, comfortable victory in their first home match

Clitheroe cruised to a stylish, comfortable victory in their first home match of the season and sent the Blue part of the bumper crowd home with a spring in their step.

The Yorkshire side had no answer to the energetic, pressing game favoured by the Blues' manager and this pattern was repeated throughout the game. Early chances fell to Clitheroe, with Dimitri Tuanzebe heading over from a corner, Joe Mitchell curling a right foot shot on to the post, and Kurt Willoughby seeing his turn and shot deflected wide.

Willoughby was running the line well, and on 21 minutes he just failed to latch on to a Tuanzebe through ball, before being marginally offside 2 minutes later. A rare chance for the visitors came on 28 minutes, where the home defence was outmuscled before a Boro striker lashed the ball full into the face of Gareth Roberts as he hurled himself in its path. Roberts couldn’t continue and was replaced by Ryan Cattermole who slotted in effortlessly.

Boro's best chance of the game came on 32 minutes when good work on the left saw a Clitheroe air shot before an enormous slice when the goal was looking inviting. The blip of pressure did not last long and on 38 minutes Willoughby laid the ball off to Alex Newby who whipped the ball goalwards with great power, only to his shot tipped over.

The Blues were not be denied though, and on 42 minutes Willoughby took the ball on the left, pushed it past his marker and lashed it under the advancing keeper.

Half time: Clitheroe 1 – 0 Scarborough

The second half followed the same pattern, but with Mike Hampson causing real problems down the right flank, in probably his best game in a blue shirt.

On 52 minutes, Hampson hared down the right and whipped the ball in behind the defence, with Willoughhby just failing to connect. Hampson overlapped again 63 minutes and on this occasion saw his shot well saved.

Ten minutes later, the lead was extended as another Hampson burst and shot, saw a hapless Boro defender glance the shot over the keeper. Only three minutes later, Hampson surged again with real pace and his thunderous shot brought a great save, only for Willoughby to follow in the rebound.

Aside from a couple of clean saves by Chris Thompson, that was the end of the action.

The home players were jubilant whilst the away team looked like they needed a good rest.
