Clitheroe sunk by two late goals

By Chris Musson

Clitheroe's inability to close out a game when on top came back to haunt them as they let slip a two goal lead to concede all three points to a strong Glossop side.

With debutant Charlie Russell starting in midfield in place of the suspended Brad Carroll, the Blues kicked off into a glaring sun behind the clubhouse end, and the start could barely have been better when after four minutes, Alex Newby seemed to have lost the ball on the left after riding a number tackles, only to pick out Russell on the edge of the box. His driven shot curled at pace into the top corner. Newby was at the heart of most of the home side's best play, but apart from a regulation stop from Chris Thompson on 17 minutes, chances were at a premium.

On 24 minutes, Robbie Bromley had an ambitious run and shot go wide, before the play swang to the other end where a stupendous tackle from Danny Brady, when surrounded by opposing forwards, saved a certain goal. On 33 minutes, Dimitri Tuanzebe worked his way into the box, and although he could not loose off a shot, the returning Kurt Willoughby struck a sweet shot from 15 yards into the goal. Clitheroe were good value for the lead. However, the lead would not last till the break.

On 43 minutes, as the defence peered into the low sun, a thunderbolt Glossop free kick was superbly saved by Thompson, but as the ball wriggled free from his grasp, the free ball was tucked home. It could have been worse one minute later, as Glossop sprang the offside trap and the resultant shot speared across the goal when it looked easier to score.

The second half saw the away team come out with more purpose. On 48 minutes, a long ball dipped over the Clitheroe defence and the Glossop striker controlled it, only to put his shot wide of the post. Two minutes later, great attacking play carved open the home defence and as defenders back-pedalled, Thompson made a great block only for the follow up to be spooned over the bar as the goal gaped.

On a rare foray forward, Macauley Harewood charged down the right and unleashed a cracking drive that was foiled with difficulty. 10 minutes later, sub Stavros Tserpes and Newby worked their way down the ground but with no end product. On 80 minutes, Ollie Stirzaker cushioned a long ball in the Glossop box, turned and shot just wide.

However, the force was starting to be with the away side. On 81 minutes, a Glossop player span on the edge of the box, hit the post, and the forward following up was deemed offside. Three minutes later, a Glossop forward ghosted across the box and leathered in a great equaliser. The comeback was complete three minutes later when a ball down the left hand channel saw a lack of understanding between Brady and Thompson and the forward nipped in to score.

The healthy travelling contingent celebrated mightily as the home fans dreamt of what could and probably should have been.
