Destiny loom - by Chris Musson

Clitheroe secured the points after a nervy first half against Ossett Albion, and lined up two shoot outs with fellow play off contenders in the next seven days.

With Albion secure from relegation, they played with a freedom which contrasted with the Blues, who knew what the prize was, and were possibly guilty of overcomplicating in the first half. Virtually all the pressure came from the Blues, but with Bordman up front for Albion, they could never fully relax. Charlie Russell was first to show on 7 minutes when his shot was well smothered by the keeper. Albion even had a spell of pressure on 14 minutes, when a dangerous free kick and then an offside goal could have changed the day's dynamics.
As the play swung back to Clitheroe, Dimitri Tuanzebe was almost gifted a goal as the keeper drove the ball at him, and as it ballooned back over his head, it took a despairing defender's leg to usher the ball to safety. Kurt Willoughby was ruled offside on 19 minutes as he sprang the offside trap, but this looked a harsh call. The best chance came on 31 minutes, when a deep Clitheroe free kick was headed back into the mix by Danny Brady leaving Brad Carroll a chance from two yards, which he somehow scuffed.

Clitheroe leapt out of the traps for the second half, but Willoughby under hit his shot as he ran on goal. Brady headed wide on 51 minutes, but home hearts were in their mouths as Bordman arrowed a superb ball from the right to pick out his fellow striker, who drove the ball across the Clitheroe goal. Simon Howarth shuffled his pack and brought on Aidan Kirby, and this proved the master stroke.
On 68 minutes, Alex Newby surged down the right and fed Kirby, who used his upper body strength to shrug off his marker and to pick his spot in the far corner. The same double act almost doubled the lead six minutes later as Newby hared 60 yards down the pitch and his scudding cross just eluded Kirby as the ball arrived just too late for his run. The points were secured on 85 minutes when a Brady pass freed Newby, who continued his purple scoring patch and eased the ball under the keeper.

Nervous stuff for the fans, but in the end a relatively easy win for Clitheroe. All roads now point to Colne for a promotion six pointer and Clitheroe's biggest game for over a decade.
