Blues again look up to land midfield man Danny O'Brien

“Danny signing is another huge coup for this football club."

The ambitious Blues have added more top-quality pedigree to their ranks with the capture of former England youth international Danny O’Brien.

The attacking midfielder becomes the fourth new arrival at Shawbridge this summer as player-boss David Lynch continues to strengthen his squad for the 2020/21 season.

O’Brien finished last term with BetVictor Premier Division side Atherton Collieries after brief spells with Hyde United and Curzon Ashton.

The 24-year-old also previously played alongside Lynch in National League North at Alfreton Town and also has top-flight Finnish footall on his CV after starting his career in England at Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic.

“Danny signing is another huge coup for this football club,” said Lynch, who has also brought in defender Danny Priestley and midfield men Ross Dent and Danny Pilkington since returning to the Blues as boss earlier this month.

“Having played with him I know first-hand how talented he is and I am delighted he has chosen to drop down a level to join us.

“I know Danny inside out and he knows what I expect every week in terms of work ethic.

“Danny is not only a great player but a fantastic lad and I am over the moon he’s chosen Clitheroe.”

As well as featuring for Wigan at first-team level in the League Cup, Leigh-born O’Brien enjoyed loan spells with Wrexham and Chester FC during his time with the Latics.

And he also brings to the Blues an international history after being capped by England at Under-17 level.

“Danny has a great pedigree in the game, having started at Aston Villa and later making his debut for Wigan as a teenager,” said Blues director of football Carl Garner.

“He’s also had a good spell playing in Finland and is another with fantastic dead-ball delivery who pops up regularly on the scoresheet, often with spectacular goals.

“He adds to David’s offensive options and yet again the club has backed David to be able to bring in another of his main targets.”
