Superb start to Shawbridge showpiece and more to come

The Blues’ Spring Football Festival got off to a fantastic start as football returned to Shawbridge.

After more than three months of inactivity due to Covid restrictions, football was back with a bang.

Four fantastic and competitive games spread over two days got the festival off on the perfect footing and whet the appetite for what’s to come over the next three weekends.

And while fans were sadly unable to attend due to on-going regulations around spectator sport, no-one had to miss out.

Superb streaming of each game from our camera crew and commentary team at Ribble FM saw every fixture go out live.

Fans of all clubs have been quick to respond and sign up and at a one-one off price of just £10 for a ‘virtual’ ticket that includes all matches, up to and including the final on 1 May, it’s still well worth getting on board.

Meanwhile, on the pitch it was a weekend for the underdogs.

Barnoldswick made a superb start in game one by drawing 2-2 with a young Fleetwood Town side, who needed a late penalty to earn a point after a double from Barlick striker Zack Dale.

And Clitheroe then made a losing start to their group on Saturday afternoon when a second-half header from Jack Walls earned Stockport County’s Academy side a 1-0 win.

Day two kicked off with another entertaining 2-2 draw between an Accrington Stanley XI and Rimington, with the villagers twice hitting back to level through Olly Devenney and Jonny Murphy before Matty Whitworth’s penalty save secured them a point.

And it was also honours even in the final game of the opening weekend as Hurst Green enjoyed their moment in the sun by coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Marine thanks to a Scott Craven double.

Clitheroe will be looking to bounce back when they start the action next Saturday against Rimington in Group 1.

And Fleetwood then face Marine in Group 2 in a game switched to a 4.15pm KO to follow the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Sunday then sees Hurst Green take on Barnoldswick before Accrington play Stockport County.
