At the age of 39, Clitheroe’s then assistant manager Kenny Mayers made Blue history, when he played in the same side as his son Louis Mayers.

Nowadays, Kenny is manager of Leyland United in the West Lancs Division Two. Whereas Louis is back at Shawbridge half a decade on from his first spell, looking to fire his side into the top half of the table.

Now 44, Kenny Mayers will always be a cult-hero in the eyes of not only Clitheroe fans, but many Lancastrians. After successful spells with the likes of Chorley and Hyde earlier in the decade.

Mayers has backed his son Louis to improve playing under Simon Garner at Clitheroe and is happy to see he has settled in so well at the club;

“I’m really happy to see Louis settled in at Clitheroe. I’ve not been able to watch him yet but the game I saw him play away at Padiham I could see how hard the team works for each other.”

He added; “I can tell Louis has got his hunger back, he’s really enjoying his football again." Mayers senior added; "He’s had stop and start periods to his career at Padiham and he was in and out of the side. I’m glad he’s getting that game time now and hopefully now he gets his form up too.”

Before Mayers junior re-joined the Blues three months ago, his last goal for the club came on the 5th October 2010. When the striker scored a 90th minute equaliser during a 2-2 draw at home to Ossett Albion.

Mayers senior has told the Clitheroe faithful, we have not seen the best of Louis Mayers yet and when his time comes he has the potential to help the team reach the heights;

“You’d hope there’s more to come from Louis. He’s getting a run of games which he hasn’t done over the past few years and when he does get his form up he’ll hopefully play his part in a good, progressive season for the team.”

Kenny Mayers was Peter Smith’s right hand man during the 2010/11 season. The season that saw the Blues miss out on the play-off spots by one place and guaranteed their highest league finish in the clubs history.

Now not being able to attend games regularly due to his managerial commitments, Mayers senior finished by saying confidently, a top ten finish for the Blues is a real possibility this season and that would represent a great finish for Simon Garner’s team this year;

“I don’t see why they can’t finish in the top half of the table this season. They have the potential to finish off well and with a Trophy semi-final on the horizon, the season could go from a good one to a great one.”

“Simon Garner has brought together a young squad and has added one or two experienced faces to the team. It’s all looking bright for the future….”
