Wilson praises Youth team and ‘Robbo’
AUTHOR: JAMES BURCH
One of Tom Bartlett’s right hand men in the Clitheroe Youth team, Mark Wilson believes the season is taking place very nicely this season for the young team he helps to coach.
47 year old Wilson works in a close knit backroom with Bartlett and fellow coaches William Nolan and James Barnes. Nurturing and bringing out the best in the young Blues players.
The side currently sit 3rd in the Lancashire Sunday League Youth Division Red table and with games in hand, could be crowned champions come April. Wilson spoke about the side saying;
“Coaching the youth team has so far been pleasurable. The squad have taken on board the philosophy put before them by Tom and the level of ability produced has been top notch. The lads knuckle down and do the necessary work in training competing for a starting shirt, knowing there is always someone as capable of taking their place.”
Adding; “So far, results have shown how hard the lads have worked. We are a new team gelling nicely. It feels great and a privilege to be a part of the whole Clitheroe FC set up and it’s very nice to be back.”
With the Clitheroe Youth side winning eleven of their first fourteen matches since forming, the coaching is clearly doing the trick at the club and Wilson hopes the plan of a successful season is a real possibility;
“This squad has the capability to win the league and the cup. We will need to keep grounded, continue to work hard in training and in matches stay injury free and have a little bit of luck. It could be a successful inaugural season for the youth team. That's the plan!”
From Josh Pomfret in goal with five clean sheets, Lewis Cumpsty averaging a goal a game from midfield and Eddy Drake being one of the league’s lead marksmen the Clitheroe spine is very strong.
However Wilson has gave extra praise to midfielder David Robinson who does a lot of important work in the centre of the field that sometimes goes un-noticed. Wilson hopes ‘Robbo’ can get his chance in the first team soon and has backed the 17 year old to do just that;
“My "star" player would be Dave Robinson. He has brought a level of desire that is required for success. He’s always giving 100% for the badge on his shirt, whether in training or a match. Technically he is also very good, he has bags of energy and is abit of a bit of a joker. He’s always focused on getting the win and that’s important for the team.”
Finishing by saying; “I think Robbo would be an asset to the first team squad, he wouldn't let himself or the team down. I'm sure Simon has been keeping an eye on a few of the youth players. Given a chance I'm sure Robbo would grab it with both hands, if he continues as he has started who knows.”
