New signing Dean Winnard brings Football League know-how and 'leadership' to Blues

The Blues have added more top-class experience to their squad with the signing of ex-Accrington Stanley captain Dean Winnard.

Winnard arrives at Clitheroe after ending a three-year spell at National League North outfit Southport, where he previously played with Blues’ boss David Lynch and skipper Billy Priestley.

And the left-sided defender – who also has a League Two spell with Morecambe on an impressive CV – cites their presence and that of fellow former Blackburn Rovers youngster Gary Stopforth at Shawbridge as key to the move.

“I’ve always liked Clitheroe as a place. And as soon as Lynchy got the job and he signed Billy Priestley and then Gary Stopforth, I thought ‘I bet that would be a good club to be at,” said Winnard.

“And as soon as I spoke to Lynchy, I said ‘yes’ straight away.’”

Priestley and Stopforth both agreed extended stays with the Blues at the end of last season, with the signing of Winnard following the arrival of prolific goalscorer Sefton Gonzales earlier this summer.

Winnard spent seven seasons with Accrington after signing from Rovers, clocking up 250 league appearances for the Reds in a total of 331 senior league and cup games.

He then moved from Morecambe into non-league football with Southport, combining playing with coaching duties.

And having dropped down a couple of divisions to join the Blues, the 31-year-old will greatly enhance the Shawbridge set-up, according to Lynch.

“Being able to attract a player of Dean’s quality, experience and professionalism highlights the progression of the football club,” said the Blues’ player-manager.

“Dean is not only a brilliant player but a true leader and these type of characters are few and far between in modern football.

“I have no doubts having played with him for a short period that he will demand the highest standards in the dressing room and we are delighted he has agreed to join the club.”
