The Blues went into this one in excellent form, having won their previous three fixtured and kept three clean sheets. In addition, the clubs historic win over Chester at the weekend in the FA Trophy had given the squad extra confidence going into yet another cup competition as they faced West Didsbury.
Clitheroe’s first chance to score fell to Veron Parny in the 16th minute when he went one on one with Oliver Martin before dragging his shot wide and hitting the post.
It didn’t take long for Clitheroe to find a way to score, albeit with a helping hand of the West Didsbury defence, as Parny pressured Jack McConnell into an overhit back-pass that sailed over Martins head and into the net to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute.
The visitors then doubled their lead in the 40th minute as Parny slipped in Luke Gill who whipped in a deadly cross to Sefton Gonzales who tapped it home.
Half Time: West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC 0-2 Clitheroe FC
The second half was more of the same for Sean McConville’s men as they didn’t take their foot off the gas. This was shown by Gill scoring Clitheroe’s third of the evening in the 55th minute after a Parny shot that was fired straight at Martin was parried into the path of Gill who converted an easy chance from close range.
Things went from bad to worse for West Didsbury as Clitheroe made it four after yet another defensive blunder led to the home side putting the ball into the back of their own net again in the 75th minute.
The final blow was dealt by Clitheroe in the 89th minute as Charlie Martin picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area before drilling it into the bottom left corner to well and truly put the game to bed.
