Sean McConville’s men beat Chester FC, a side two tiers above them in the football pyramid. The win sends them into the third round of the Isuzu FA Trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
Clitheroe started off well, knocking the ball around well, setting the tempo of the game for the opening 15 minutes.
The visitors methodical approach paid off as they took the lead in the 18th minute after a Sam Olawumi header was parried by George Murray-Jones into the path of Scarborough who tapped it home from close range.
Clitheroe had the chance to double their lead in the 30th minute when Josh Briggs fired the ball across the Chester goalmouth but it went just beyond the reach of the outstretched leg of Luke Gill.
The Seals closed out the first half with a great opportunity to equalise in the 40th minute with a Connor Woods free kick right on the edge of the area that was blocked heroically by Gill.
Half Time: Chester 0-1 Clitheroe
Into the second half and Chester made four changes bringing on Tom Peers, Lewis Leigh, Kevin Roberts and Fin Roberts all in an attempt to salvage something from the game.
The substitutes almost made an instant impact as Clitheroe goalkeeper Zac Hadi was forced into action three times in four minutes saving shots from both Hayden Carson and F. Roberts.
Clitheroe nearly doubled their lead in the 71st minute however, as substitute Veron Parny found a yard of space on the right wing before floating a cross into Jack Morris whose header was saved emphatically by Murray-Jones at full stretch.
Chester squandered one last golden opportunity to equalise in the 87th minute as James Jones fizzed a ball into F. Roberts whose mis-hit shot blazed over the bar.
Full Time: Chester 0-1 Clitheroe
