Newcastle Town 2 Clitheroe 1
Clitheroe were unable to build on their first away success of the season at the weekend and fell to another away defeat despite having taken the lead.
The Blues almost got off to the perfect start when on two minutes, Emerich Poilly curled in a great low cross for Sefton Gonzles to hit first time, only for the keeper to make an outstanding point blank save. From the superb hanging corner clipped in by Connor High, the keeper flapped at the ball and Gonzales headed the ball back in to the danger area, for Sam Owalumi to stab home in a ruck of players. Newcastle were a busy, athletic side and were not fazed by going behind. On 17 minutes, Hakan Burton made an excellent save with his feet after a lofted ball was volleyed first time. Minutes later, a home free kick swiftly taken saw Burton make a superb save from a fierce snap shot. Clitheroe looked to impose themselves, but Newcastle gave them no time on the ball and were snapping at their heels. Mark Hughes almost gifted a goal with an inexplicable clearance straight to a home forward, but when half time came, Clitheroe still had the lead but with the home side in the ascendancy.
The second half followed a similar high tempo pattern. Early half chances came to both sides, but on 62 minutes, Burton was finally beaten by a shot from the edge of the box, which received a huge deflection. Clitheroe again tried to dictate the tempo of the game and a deep ball to substitute Louis Potts on the left was flicked into the box only for Gonzales and substitute Luke Gill being unable to finish from one yard. Four minutes later, Jacon Hanson burst down the right and laid the ball to Potts on the edge of the box, who settled himself before striking the ball wide. The game did not let up and tempers were fraying. However, on 82 minutes a long throw by the home side eluded three Blue defenders, leaving the loose the ball to be stabbed home. In the dying minutes a superb Dylan Dwyer cross was met by a flashing Gill heard but his effort was narrowly off target, and the game was lost.
