After a hectic summer in the transfer market, a new-look Blues side impress as they beat Prescot Cables...

Clitheroe were worthy winners of this opening day encounter, although the first half was a fairly even encounter.

The home side were first to show and after 5 minutes, a Bakkor cross was met by Mayers, but his header hit the underside of the bar and bounced on to the goal line. However, it was Prescot who took the lead after 11 minutes, when a left wing cross scudded across the box, threaded itself through every defender, leaving Doran to stroke it home.

The lead did not last long as one minute later, Dent worked his way down the right and crossed for Mayers to scuff the ball home. On 17 minutes, Harries crossed for Dean who leant back to arc his shot, but it went tamely wide. On 18 minutes, the Blues had a near escape when Jakovlevs came out of his box but drove his clearance straight at an attacker. The rebounding ball fell to the feet of another attacker, but his converted shot was ruled offside. This was turning into end to end stuff, but with the Blues having the better of possession.

On 22 minutes, Harries scooped the ball whilst prone in the box to Dean, whose lay off to Mayers was thumped against the post. On 26 minutes, home hearts were in their mouths when Bonaminio failed to deal with a skier and his scuffed clearance was driven on by an attacker, but a desperate block from Bonaminio at full stretch saved the day. On 30 minutes Dean crossed from the right but Harries could only put his shot over.

One minute later, Dean laid the ball to Bakkor and his shot just skimmed over. Finally, on 38 minutes, Anderson cushioned a header from a deep free kick into the path of Dent, when a desperate block saved a certain goal.

After all the gilt edged chances in the first half, it was almost inevitable that Clitheroe took the lead from an unusual source, as one minute into the second half Clitheroe scored direct from a Harries corner. Eight minutes later, Harries got his second when he cut in from the left and skimmed a right footed shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards out.

From then onwards, Prescot barely left their half as Clitheroe laid siege to the goal. Further clear chances fell to Dean and to Mayers, but in the end, the ovation the players received at the end confirmed that this had been a tremendously entertaining game and has set the bar high for the rest of the season.

Team: Jakovlevs, Heywood, Walker, Bonaminio, Anderson, Dent, Harries, Lynch (captain), Mayers, Dean, Bakkor. Subs Used - Jack Lynch, Hession, Hampson, Not used Murphy, Garner
