Rampant Clitheroe March On

Fabio Passerini23 Nov - 18:22

Clitheroe came out on top in yet another dominant display to make it five wins in their last five games after a 4-1 victory at home against Stafford Rangers.

Heading into this one, both teams were in contrasting form with Clitheroe winning four of their last four games and Stafford only winning one in their last four. But on this occasion, it was the home side that took all three points.

Clitheroe took an early lead in the 14th minute when a loose ball fell to Danny Wilkins who rifled it into the net from 30 yards.

Luke Gill squandered a chance to double Clitheroe’s lead in the 19th minute after Josh Briggs crossed the ball into the winger who fired straight at goalkeeper, Arron Davies.

Against the run of play, Stafford grabbed an equaliser in the 26th minute when Dylan Scott tapped it home from close range after a wonderful Callum Wilson cross.

Gill came close to scoring again in the 38th minute when Cameron Lancaster played a through ball to the onrushing attacker, but he hit the inside of the post with his attempt and the ball agonisingly rolled across the goalmouth.

The best chance of the half fell to Veron Parny, with the Frenchman being handed a penalty after being brought down in the box, but Aaron Davies guessed correctly and denied him in the 40th minute.

Half Time: Clitheroe FC 1-1 Stafford Rangers

The Blues’ relentless pressure eventually paid off as they took the lead in the 47th minute through Harry Scarborough, after Parny crossed a ball into Josh Briggs who laid the ball off for the in-form striker to finish easily.

Parny was then instrumental once more as he made it 3-1 in the 58th minute, with a wonderful solo goal that he curled into the bottom corner after cutting inside from the right wing.

Gill finally got his goal and put the game to bed for the home side, scoring a wonderful volley from just inside the box after an inch perfect Jacob Hanson cross in the 66th minute.

Full Time: Clitheroe FC 4-1 Stafford Rangers

This win sees Clitheroe extend their tremendous run of form and jump up to 11th in the table. The next time Sean McConville’s Blues are in action is on Tuesday 25th November at home against Chasetown.
