Clitheroe ground out a hard fought victory, again in testing conditions. Thanks to the Volunteers at Atherton whose hard work ensured the game was even on.
Christopher Lynch scored the opening goal for Atherton on 27 minutes rather against the run of play putting Atherton 1-0. Their lead lasted 3 minutes before George West with a tap in after the right back let the ball go under his foot levelled the score at 1-1 and on a heavy pitch that was the half time scoreline.
The second half, as it has been in previous games lately, was when Clitheroe shined. On 55 minutes George West with his second slammed into the bottom corner after great work from Danny Byrnes. 1-2.
Probably the best taken goal of the afternoon when Alex Newby with a controlled flick over the keeper, when sent free, scored in the 62nd minute. 1-3. It was Atherton next on the score sheet on 75 minutes when Darrhyl Mason took the score to 2-3 although it looked a tad offside.
Kurt Willoughby was then brought down in the box and Willoughby himself coolly slotted home the penalty. 2-4.
The last attack prove worthy for Newby 90th to score his second after an assist from Willoughby.
Final score 2-5. The goal machine keeps spurting out goals. Clitheroe were exceptional again today. Looked dangerous every time they attacked.
