Clitheroe dominated the game for large parts but were ultimately undone by a hotly contested second yellow card and by a scruffy equaliser inn the dying minutes.

Lee Ashforth set his team up in a very attacking formation and it was no surprise that most chances fell the way of the Blues. On 6 minutes, Max Hazeldine exchanged passes to get behind the defence but ballooned his shot over. One minute later, returning skipper Jacob Gregory jinked on the edge of the box and forced a good full length save. The Newcastle defence was well marshalled, and it was not until the end of the half that Clitheroe had more than half chances.
On 40 minutes, Gregory again had a good chance but scuffed his shot, before on the stroke of half time Jay Jeffries almost broke the frame of the goal as he thumped a header against the bar from a corner.
Chances came more regularly in the second half. One minute in, Gregory went on a mazy run and slipped in Antoine Recizac, who forced a great save from a well hit shot. On 51 minutes after great pressure, Gregory slammed the ball against the bar, before six minutes later skimming the woodwork with another fine shot.
The home fans were wondering if it was to be their day, but on 68 minutes, Hazeldine ran on to a bouncing ball and smashed it into the goal to give the home side the lead. The complexion of the game changed when Ben Matthews was shown a second yellow for kicking the ball away, and the pressure from the visitors grew. On 87 minutes, from a long throw, the ball was prodded home for an equaliser, to silence the home crowd and to deny Clitheroe their first home league win of the season.
