FA Cup second qualifying round.
Att. 638
Clitheroe fully deserved their win against their higher ranked opposition and reached the 3rd Qualifying Round for the first time in 12 years. From the outset, Sefton Gonzales was a thorn in the Spennymoor side and he engineered a number of half chances in the opening minutes. Clitheroe took the lead on 28 minutes when young centre back Cameron Lancaster received a scuffed cross in the box and leant into a scudding volley to open the scoring.
Max Cane went close for the home side four minutes later when he was released by Gonzales and he outpaced the defender before shooting across the face of goal. On the stroke of half time, Gonzales made it 2-0 as he latched on to the ball in a melee in the opposition box and stabbed it home before leaping into the fans behind the goal. The expected Spennymoor second half onslaught never materialised, and Clitheroe comfortably navigated their progress to the next round.
