Clitheroe went out of their second FA competition in the space of four days, this time on penalties, but the score could have been different if they had set about Marske from the off.

Both sides started sluggishly with the home side paying too much respect to their higher ranked opponents. Clitheroe dangerman Sefton Gonzales was being well marshalled by the visiting defence and Marske had a number of early half chances. Much of Clitheroe’s good work was being done by overlapping full back Jack Burrows, and he laid off early chances to colleagues before crashing a great shot over after a great break. There was no great shape to the first half, but it was Clitheroe who hit the post on 44 minutes from a measured shot from Richie Baker.

The second half needed a spark and the game got it when Gonzales shielded the ball on 51 minutes and freed Max Cane who buried the ball expertly. Cane was dropped shortly after for a great penalty shout, but it was Marske fullback Connor Smith who brought the scores level after a burst down the right as he lashed an unstoppable shot on an acute angle past Clitheroe keeper Chris Thompson. The game was starting to open up and Thompson made a point blank save from a close-range header, before a minute later a penalty was given for a ball bouncing to hit Clitheroe debutant unfortunately on the arm. Adam Boyes converted the penalty. This then provided the home side with the impetus they needed and on 83 minutes a great Baker pass was diverted by Gonzales into the path of Reece Webb -Foster to level the scores. Chances came at either end before penalties were required to separate the two sides.

Marske’s four perfect penalties were too much for Clitheroe and it is the North Easterners who progress.
