Ossett United 2-1 Clitheroe FAT 27-10-2018

Clitheroe put in a fine performance in the FA Trophy against everyone’s tip for the Division 1 East title, newly formed Ossett United, and despite taking the lead, could not hold on to their advantage.

With kick off delayed due to a players’ car breaking down on the M62, there were a number of the team who were literally putting on their shin pads as the teams came out. The Blues just about shaded the first half, although on five minutes a deflection from a central Ossett free kick on the edge of the area could have gone anywhere. Antoine Recizac was looking bright and several minutes later had a good shot saved after a trademark burst, whilst on 16 minutes the Blues took the lead when from a cleared corner, Max Hazeldine fed the ball to Jacob Gregory whose cross was driven home by Lewis Sugden.
Chances came at both ends, with Cameron Terry making a superb one on one save after the advancing forward beat the offside trap and lashed the ball goalwards. Recizac then slipped Gregory through only for a defender to desperately clear the danger. Two more chances fell the home side’s way, with Terry making another outstanding double save, but before the break, both Recizac and Gregory had clear sight of goal.

With Clitheroe looking to soak up pressure in the second half, they had the worst possible start when on 49 minutes, an Ossett forward burst down the left and crossed low into the box before it was fired home unchallenged. The wind was in Ossett’s sails and whilst Gregory went close as he hit the post on 57 minutes, the home team did the same after an uncharacteristic slip from Derek Ubah let in a forward. Gregory had another chance after good Hazeldine work, but by this point Clitheroe were hanging on.
Terry smothered another great shot on 76 minutes, three minutes later three Ossett players combined to fail to connect with a scudding right-wing cross, but it was no surprise when the home team took the lead on 83 minutes after Terry’s half punch was returned with interest from 10 yards. There was still time for more action as Jay Jeffries saw red for a straight red for a bad challenge 30 seconds after a melee in the Clitheroe box which saw Terry seemingly kicked in the head.

This was a brave effort by Clitheroe against a well resourced and canny side. They can hold their heads high.
